BluTube Frequently Asked Questions

Still Need Help?

What if I'm getting slow water flow through my BluTube?

If you are getting low or slow water flow through BluTube, this is often an indication of an air leak or biofilm buildup. In the case of biofilm buildup, it is best practice to shock your waterlines. In the case of a possible air leak, the first step is to find which line is affected. To find an air leak, we recommend:

• Filling your bottle to the top and begin flushing through each handpiece.

• Notice which handpiece the low flow begins– this is usually where the air leak is.

Once the air leak has been isolated, call your service tech for next steps.

Other troubleshooting recommendations:

• Make sure that the shipping cap is off of the bottom of the straw.

• Make sure that your dental unit is set to 45 PSI.

• Make sure that the connection between the straw and the clear luer lock as well as the connection between the plastic tubing and the straw are both tight and secure.

See here for our BluTube connection guide.

For A-dec bottle users: ensure that the bottle’s collar is sealed tight upon reinstallation.

Are there any health risks associated with iodine-based treatments?

Iodine-based treatment products are completely safe for patient use. BluTube contains Iodine in its elemental state – which means no other molecules are attached to it and is non-allergenic. Iodine is an element that is naturally present throughout the body and is essential for the production of thyroid hormones. The term “iodine allergy” involves iodine with extra molecules attached, that can respond negatively to the body when ingested.

Below are resources that have helped educate us as well as leading studies that have shaped the world’s understanding of iodine allergies:

What is the pink straw in the BluTube box?

That is a dummy straw – used for shocking your waterlines. A dummy straw is used in replacement of your straw while you shock so that you don’t damage your straw. Once you’re done shocking, you can can reattach your straw.  Your dummy straws can be reused, but you’ll always get a fresh one in each BluTube box.

Always consult the manufacturer’s instructions for guidelines and best practices when shocking.

Can I use one BluTube cartridge for longer than 6 months?

In short, no. To maintain the most effective waterline treatment, BluTube should be replaced every 6 months. Unlike traditional straws which can become increasingly ineffective at the 7-9 month mark, BluTube gives you a second straw to make it through the full year. BluTube comes with an automatic replacement indicator to help you remember to replace your straw.
